Bringing a loved one home to Nigeria.

For a return from Dallas to Nigeria, confirm the consular permission, Port Health waiver and receiving arrangements before booking transport. Begin with the family’s final destination and the person who will coordinate reception. Ask for the current instructions for your individual case.

Start with the mission serving Texas

The Nigerian Consulate General in Atlanta lists Texas within its consular service area. Contact its consular team about the case before sending original documents or payment. Ask how the funeral home should submit the file and receive the permission letter.

Explain where your loved one is currently in care, the destination community and who is authorized to decide. Ask for a review of the proposed route and receiving arrangements. Publication of this guide does not confirm transport availability to every Nigerian destination.

Build the file around Atlanta’s published checklist

The Atlanta consulate’s checklist includes death and transit records, a noncommunicable-disease letter, notarized embalming and sealed-metal-casket statements, Nigerian identity evidence, receiving-party contacts and a funeral-home request. It also calls for a Federal Ministry of Health / Port Health Services waiver.

Ask the consulate to confirm the current originals, copies, submission method and payment before assembling the package. The list concerns shipment of a body; ask separately about ashes.

Assign each item to the funeral home, family or responsible public office. Check names across the records before anything is mailed. Our document guide explains why a death certificate and a transport permit serve different purposes.

Track the Port Health waiver separately

Put the waiver on the case checklist as its own unresolved item until the responsible office confirms approval. Ask who submits the request, what the receiving contact must provide and how the arranging funeral home receives the result. Do not assume that a consular request automatically completes the health step.

Keep the family’s planned service date provisional while approvals or carrier acceptance remain unresolved. Request an explanation of the next missing item instead of treating a general processing estimate as a delivery promise.

Make the receiving arrangement specific

Record the receiving party’s name, contact details, proposed arrival point and final community. Ask who obtains release on arrival, who transports your loved one onward and which provider takes responsibility at each handoff.

  • Ask the receiving provider for a written description of its services and charges.
  • Clarify whether a further ground journey requires a separate arrangement.
  • Share the family’s faith, viewing and burial preferences before preparation is agreed.
  • Agree who updates relatives if the itinerary changes.

If no receiving provider has been selected, say so at the first conversation. A proposed destination alone does not establish an arrival plan.

Confirm consular charges and the transport quote

The consulate’s administrative-charge notice and shipment checklist show different fee references. Ask for the currently payable amount and accepted payment method before buying a money order or sending payment. This guide does not choose between those published figures.

Request separate written charges for Texas services, preparation, documents, container, airline transport, reception and the onward journey. Identify estimates and who authorizes changes. The cost guide explains funeral-home pricing; it does not establish a total Dallas-to-Nigeria price.

Ask for separate instructions for cremated remains

If your family chooses ashes, tell the consulate and airline exactly how the urn is intended to travel. Ask about entry documentation, the urn, passenger carriage or cargo, and any connection. Do not assume that a body-shipment checklist is the correct checklist for ashes.

Before buying a ticket or container, clarify who carries the records, where they are checked and who receives the urn. Use the callback form for an initial conversation; do not place passport numbers or private medical details in it.

Questions families can ask now

Does the Atlanta office serve Dallas?
Its published service area includes Texas. Confirm the current submission instructions directly with its consular team.
Can we book while the waiver is pending?
Ask the director which approvals and receiving confirmations must be in place before a booking is appropriate. Do not treat a pending request as approval.
What if a Nigerian passport cannot be located?
Tell the consulate before submitting the file and ask what alternative identity evidence it accepts for the case.
