How to choose
A casket is the single largest line item in a traditional funeral, so it's worth knowing a few things before you shop. These are the same points we walk families through in person.
Start with the service you want
The casket follows the service, not the other way around. A direct burial or cremation with no viewing only needs a simple combustible container. A graveside service benefits from something presentable but not elaborate. A traditional viewing and funeral calls for a casket you'd be comfortable seeing for several hours.
Wood vs. metal is a matter of preference
Despite what you may read, no casket — wood, steel, bronze, or copper — stops the natural processes of burial. Gasketed metal caskets slow moisture entry, but none are genuinely "sealed." Choose the material you find most fitting, not the one marketed as the most protective.
Check the gauge on metal, the species on wood
For steel caskets, a lower gauge number means thicker metal (18-gauge is heavier than 20-gauge). For wood caskets, ask whether it's solid hardwood or veneered — both are legitimate, but they're priced differently.
Online caskets are real, and they're welcome
Costco, Walmart, Trusted Caskets, and Overnight Caskets all ship directly to funeral homes and are often 30–50% less than what you'd pay at a traditional provider. Give them your delivery address and service date. We receive, inspect, and use it — no markup, no pushback.
