Confirm the embassy’s shipment file
The Ethiopian embassy’s published body-shipment guidance lists a death record, a funeral-home letter covering preservation and a sealed casket, a local health letter, burial permission and passport evidence. It describes issuance of embassy permission after the required file is complete.
Ask the embassy how to submit the current application and which originals must accompany it. Ask the director to compare the current consular and airline instructions before selecting preparation or packaging. A permit does not itself establish a booking.
Gather a usable destination address
The embassy’s online shipment-request form asks for region, zone or sub-city, district or wereda, house number, an Ethiopian phone contact and an agent or courier contact. It also displays document-upload fields.
Ask the receiving family to confirm the local address format and an accessible contact before the application is assembled. Explain if the final service or burial location differs from the person’s address. Keep the arrival contact and final destination together in the plan.

Assign responsibility for each document
Ask the director to identify what the family supplies, what the funeral home prepares and what a public office must issue. Keep a status list showing requested, received, checked and submitted items. Compare names and dates before the file is sent.

If a relative will carry ashes
Ethiopian Airlines’ published ashes policy permits cabin or checked carriage subject to its conditions. It directs travelers to confirm destination permission, specifies plastic or cardboard containers rather than ceramic or metal, and calls for a sealed inner bag and supporting records.
Before choosing an urn or buying a ticket, ask the operating airline and embassy to confirm the documents, translation, container and itinerary for the actual journey. Check any other carrier separately. An airline’s baggage policy is not an entry permit.
Agree who handles arrival and the onward journey
Name the receiving provider, the family contact and who can authorize changes. Ask who obtains release at arrival and who takes responsibility for transport to the final community. Confirm each handoff between providers.
