Request the embassy’s letter of no objection
The Kenya Embassy in Washington, D.C. publishes a service for transporting a deceased Kenyan's body or ashes. It requests evidence of Kenyan identity and supporting records, then issues a letter of no objection. Its mailing address is 2249 R Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20008. Confirm submission instructions before sending originals from Dallas.
The embassy says this service carries no fee; that does not make funeral preparation, postage or air transport free. Ask the sending professional to separate those costs in the written quote. If the person was not a Kenyan citizen, request the applicable procedure rather than assuming a citizen-focused checklist covers the case. Keep tracking information for any original identity document sent away.
Arrange Port Health notification before arrival
Kenya Ministry of Health Port Health guidance calls for notification at least 24 hours before arrival, transit or departure of human remains. It lists embalming and death records, identification, a diplomatic letter and a burial-transit permit or cremation certificate. The death certificate must be in English or Swahili; a notifiable-disease death requires Director General of Health approval.
Have the receiving professional identify who will notify the Port Health officers at the actual entry airport. Ask that person to confirm receipt and explain how a changed flight must be reported. The notice period is not a promised clearance time. Keep the name of the health contact and the cargo arrival details together so relatives are not left relaying contradictory information.
Resolve differences between official checklists
The ministry's March 2023 import requirements sheet marked a burial-transit permit and embassy letter optional. The current Port Health page lists those categories in its clearance documents. Use the current receiving authority's instructions for the actual shipment; an older PDF should not be used to promise that the embassy letter can be skipped.

Ask which documents need legalization
Kenya is absent from the HCCH Apostille Convention status table consulted for this guide. An apostille is therefore not a universal finishing step for this destination. The embassy's document-authentication page distinguishes Kenyan and foreign nationals and provides a separate legalization process. Ask which route applies to the document and recipient before paying for authentication.
A letter of no objection for the transfer is not the same service as legalizing a record for a bank or court. Make a recipient list: embassy, receiving provider, civil-registration office and any institution handling the estate. For each one, obtain its required document version and authentication instructions. Order additional certified copies according to those confirmed needs instead of assuming one certificate serves every purpose.
Consider Dubai connections to Nairobi
Emirates’ Dallas–Dubai schedule page lists seven flights weekly from DFW to DXB. The airline's July 1, 2026 Nairobi announcement records the launch of EK717 and three daily Dubai–Nairobi services, or 21 weekly flights, to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). That dated pattern does not identify a weekly day with fewer Nairobi departures.
Treat Dallas–Dubai–Nairobi as a route to investigate with Emirates SkyCargo, not an accepted consignment. Passenger frequency alone cannot establish space for a coffin or approval for a transfer through Dubai. Ask for the booked cargo legs and receiving contact. If the final destination is outside Nairobi, obtain a separate onward-transport plan before inviting relatives to meet the flight.
Agree on preparation before sealing
Emirates Solace describes hermetically sealed inner containment for bodies, a mandatory sealed-container certificate and protected urn packaging. Confirm that the carrier's accepted package also satisfies the Kenyan receiving authorities' instructions. The funeral professional should resolve the final packaging specification before the family selects a ceremonial presentation.
Explain any wish for a viewing, prayers or a gathering at the receiving location before preparation is finalized. Ask the Kenyan provider what can be offered after release, where it would happen and which arrangements depend on the condition and permitted handling of the remains. No family should be promised that an air-transport seal can simply be opened on demand.
Use the official diaspora reporting channel
A February 2026 embassy notice explains that the Diaspora Integrated Information System (DIIMS) connects services with eCitizen, including reporting a death, requests by distressed persons and counselling. Follow the embassy's link to the official platform if the family needs those services. The notice does not promise funding for a repatriation or establish an automatic financial benefit.
Choose one family contact to keep the reference numbers and responses. Ask whether a diaspora death report leads to any separate civil-registration step and which office issues the needed Kenyan record. Do not assume an online report is a death certificate or the embassy's transport letter. Personal records belong in the official service's approved submission process, not this website's callback form.
Prepare questions about assets in Kenya
The Kenyan Judiciary’s family-court forms include Forms 81 and 82 for seeking the sealing of a grant issued in another country. Their availability identifies an issue to discuss with a qualified Kenyan lawyer; it does not establish that a particular U.S. grant qualifies or that a family member can transfer property immediately.
Ask counsel which court process applies, who may act and what certified documents the court or asset holder needs. Keep the will, any existing grant and an inventory of Kenyan assets available for that consultation. Funeral coordination does not determine beneficiaries. A person authorized to collect the remains may need different authority to deal with land, accounts or other estate property.
Check Customs treatment of inherited belongings
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) inherited-goods FAQ describes duty relief for used personal effects belonging to the deceased, inherited or bequeathed to the recipient and not intended for resale. Confirm how Customs applies those conditions to the proposed consignment. The statement is not a blanket exemption for every object a family wishes to send.
Identify each item, its intended recipient and any ownership evidence requested by Customs. Keep those records separate from the health file for the remains. Ask the carrier about separately declared baggage or freight and packaging restrictions. Resolve disputed ownership with the appropriate legal adviser before shipping; a cargo label should not be used to decide who inherits a possession.

- Does the embassy’s no-fee service cover the whole journey?
- No. That statement applies to its transport-letter service. Obtain a written quote for preparation, carrier charges, receiving care and other services.
- Is the advance health notice a guarantee of release?
- No. Notification and clearance are different steps. The receiving team must confirm the file, arrival details and any further authority requirements.
- Does reporting the death in DIIMS settle the estate?
- No. Ask about civil registration separately and obtain qualified Kenyan advice about authority over assets. The diaspora report does not determine beneficiaries.
