Confirm the Ghanaian office handling the Texas file
Start with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington and ask which consular office handles a death in Dallas or Fort Worth. The U.S. State Department Ghana contact page identifies Washington and New York contacts. A published New York checklist is useful background, but it does not establish that a Texas family should mail its originals there.
Explain whether the request concerns a body or cremated remains, the person's nationality, the arrival airport and the final town. Request the current document list and submission method before arranging authentication. Keep the named consular contact with your family coordinator's notes so a replacement flight or corrected death record reaches the same file.
Use Ghana-specific authentication instructions
Ghana does not appear in the HCCH Apostille Convention contracting-party table checked for this guide. Do not assume that an apostille used for another destination completes Ghana's process. Ask the Ghanaian office which authentication or consular legalization steps apply to each Texas death or health document.
The Texas Secretary of State authentication guidance explains the state's role for Texas public records. Tell the office the destination country and record type; federal records follow a different issuing chain. Obtain the required certified version first. Track the certificate, any attached authentication and the institution requesting it, rather than purchasing an identical document package for every recipient.
Keep body and ashes paperwork distinct
Ghana’s New York mission lists death, burial or transit, embalmer, health-authority and passport records for body transfers, with an original and two photocopies for authentication. Its ashes instructions identify death and cremation certificates and a hermetically sealed container. These are that mission's published requirements; confirm the instructions applicable to your Texas case.

Arrange Ghana’s import and burial documentation
Registration of Births and Deaths Regulations, 2021, regulation 31 addresses importing remains or ashes and includes origin-country health certification and sealed containment requirements. Preparation belongs with the responsible funeral professionals. Ask the Ghanaian receiving team to check the current application of that regulation before the coffin or urn is finalized.
The Ghana Statistical Service CRVS procedures, section 4.3.8 identify a Births and Deaths Registry burial permit for a body brought into Ghana, supported by origin-country health, medical and death records. Request a written receiving checklist specifying who presents those records. A consular stamp and an airway bill should not be treated as proof that local permission for burial has already been obtained.
Research Dallas–Dubai–Accra with dated schedules
Emirates’ Dallas–Dubai page lists seven weekly DFW–DXB flights. Its June 19, 2026 Accra announcement describes eleven weekly Dubai–Accra services from July 12: the existing daily operation plus EK789 on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The announced Accra pattern therefore has fewer departures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, without implying that service stops on those days.
This supports researching a connection through Dubai to Accra (ACC), not a confirmed human-remains itinerary. Emirates SkyCargo must approve cargo acceptance, the connection and destination handling for the actual date. Do not schedule a ceremony from passenger flight availability alone. Obtain the final airway-bill details and an arrival update before the receiving driver leaves for the airport.
Have the carrier confirm the sealed package
The Emirates Solace handling document requires hermetically sealed inner containment for a body and identifies a sealed-container certificate as mandatory on Emirates. It also describes protected urn packaging and advance coordination of origin and destination documents. The sending professional should reconcile the carrier's instructions with Ghana's requirements for the selected shipment.
Ask who checks the final measurements, confirms acceptance and keeps the certificate with the cargo paperwork. A suitable ceremonial coffin is not automatically an accepted shipping package. Any desired viewing should be discussed before sealing, with the receiving professional explaining what can be arranged after arrival. Do not promise relatives that an international transport container can be opened at the airport.
Check the Ghanaian receiving facility
The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) describes registration, inspection, licensing and monitoring of facilities. Ask the proposed receiving provider for its current facility details and verify them with the regulator where necessary. A recommendation from a relative does not establish the facility's authority or its acceptance of this particular arrival.
Confirm who collects the remains, where they will be held and who communicates with the cemetery. Put the airport transfer, any further journey toward Kumasi or another town, and storage arrangements in the receiving quote. This guide names no partner facility. Obtain the family's agreement to the provider before sharing the case documents through the provider's approved channel.
Confirm cemetery arrangements in the correct district
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says burials within the metropolis pass through its public-health department after the Births and Deaths burial permit, including public, private and family cemeteries. Its grave-space guidance also requests medical cause-of-death documentation. These instructions concern Accra; they should not be applied automatically to a different municipality.
Give the receiving professional the exact cemetery or family burial location. Ask who holds the burial authorization and whether the planned date remains provisional. Let the family identify religious or secular observances without assuming a ceremony from nationality. Separate the confirmed burial location from invitations, travel arrangements and any gathering that can proceed independently of the shipment.
Make a separate plan for personal belongings
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) publishes a customs concession for personal effects of Ghanaians who die outside the country, with evidence of death supporting the application. Ask Customs what items and documents qualify in the individual case. This is not a statement that every estate asset, vehicle or commercial shipment enters duty-free.
Prepare a belongings inventory with the family representative and identify the intended recipient. Keep property paperwork separate from the coffin's transport file. Ask the carrier which items can travel and how separately shipped effects must be declared. Record who retains keys, identity documents and valuables; airport release of the remains does not settle ownership or inheritance questions.

- Can the family request a particular ceremony in Ghana?
- Yes. Explain the family's wishes to the receiving provider early, including any viewing. Agree on arrangements that depend on arrival only after transport and release are confirmed.
