How to ask for Salvadoran consular assistance
The foreign ministry’s May 2025 guidance says a relative starts the request by phone or in person through the ministry, embassy or consulate, followed by an interview. The consular office coordinates with the authorities abroad; after authorization, the ministry communicates arrival details and notifies the relevant Salvadoran offices. Have one family member keep the case contact and reference details. Ask which office is responsible for your situation and how updates will be shared. Consular assistance and a private funeral-service contract have different roles; ask each party what it will handle.
Health permission is a separate part of the plan
Article 125 of El Salvador’s Health Code requires Ministry of Health permission for entry, exit or internal transfer of bodies or human remains. Ask the receiving provider and responsible health office to confirm the current application, documents and permission for the specific shipment.
This is a planning guide, not a complete current health-permit checklist. Before booking, request the authority’s instructions in writing and compare them with the Texas paperwork and carrier requirements. Do not treat consular help, airline acceptance and health permission as interchangeable approvals.

Check names and identifying details across the file before submission. If a document is pending or a name differs, tell the coordinator early so the issuing office can advise on correction.
Arrange the handoff and onward travel
The final destination may be a community beyond the arrival point. Ask the receiving funeral home for its name, contact person, telephone number and responsibility for the onward journey. Confirm the agreed route with both providers and identify who will meet the shipment.
Share the family’s preferences for viewing, prayer and burial before the transport plan is finalized. Ask what can be arranged at the destination and what depends on preparation or release. Keep ceremony invitations flexible until the receiving provider confirms the actual handoff.
Costs and requests for assistance
Ask for a written quote covering the Texas services, documents, transport container, international transport, receiving services and final ground journey. The published-fee guide explains why the funeral home’s forwarding charge is only one part of a possible total.
If assistance is needed, ask the consular office whether anything applies to the family’s circumstances, what an award would cover and whether written approval is required before spending. Do not rely on an assumed reimbursement. Keep the payment obligations clear while any assistance request is unresolved.
Questions about taking ashes to El Salvador
Tell each office and the airline that the journey involves cremated remains. Ask them to confirm the documents, any health authorization, the acceptable container and whether the urn will travel with a passenger or as cargo. A short document list for one purpose does not establish every requirement for the trip.
If a relative will carry the urn, include that person in the planning and keep the documents accessible for the journey. Confirm each carrier’s acceptance before buying travel that depends on the urn being accepted.
