Identify the destination and receiving provider
Give the director the province, city and final community, along with the intended funeral or placement location. Ask the family in China to confirm the receiving provider’s contact information. Discuss who can make decisions and who will receive updates across both countries.
Specify whether the itinerary involves mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao at any stage. Ask which entry and transit instructions apply to the actual route. Do not apply this mainland planning guide to a different destination without checking.
For a body, plan the customs and quarantine work
China Customs’ body and skeletal-remains guide describes a declaration, inspection and release process. It lists identity, death, coffin-placement and preservation documents for entry, and requires a qualified international-remains service provider.
Ask the receiving professional who will make the declaration, which port will handle it and how the Texas documents meet the current requirements. Have both providers compare the same checklist before preparation. This customs procedure should not be assumed to be the passenger-ashes procedure.
For ashes, confirm the documents and travel method
China’s Munich consulate guidance, published January 2025, directs families carrying ashes home to consult the China Funeral Association’s international-remains service center and the airline about documents. It is general consular guidance from Germany, not a Texas filing checklist.
Ask the responsible Chinese mission and the receiving location what the Texas case needs. Tell the airline whether ashes will be carried by a relative or sent separately. Confirm the urn, screening, documentation and connections before buying a container or ticket.
Keep names, translations and originals consistent
Ask the receiving provider how names should appear in Chinese and in the English records. Flag spelling differences early. Identify who will review any translation and what authentication the receiving authority currently accepts before paying for that service.

Agree on the journey after arrival
Ask who obtains release, where the handoff takes place and who arranges the onward journey to the family’s community. Get the receiver’s written scope before assuming that international transport includes the final local transfer.
- Identify the person authorized to approve a change.
- Confirm the receiving contact’s availability.
- Share ceremony and viewing preferences before preparation is agreed.
- Ask who reports that each handoff is complete.

- Should documents be translated first?
- Ask the receiving authority which language, format and authentication it accepts before commissioning a translation.
