Bringing a loved one home to Bangladesh from Dallas

Where should a Dallas family begin a return to Bangladesh?

Texas is served by the consular section of the embassy in Washington, which says so plainly. What it does not do is publish the procedure: its own Dead Body Repatriation page is an empty template. One thing has changed for the better, though, and recently: Bangladesh joined the apostille system in March 2025.

Texas goes to Washington, and that is stated plainly

For once the jurisdiction question has a clean answer. The Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York publishes its jurisdiction, eight north-eastern states, and then says in one sentence that all other states are serviced by the consular section of the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington DC. Texas is one of those other states.

We also checked whether Bangladesh keeps an office in Texas. The Texas Secretary of State’s list of foreign consulates has no Bangladesh entry and the state’s per-country page for Bangladesh is not published, so we name none. The embassy’s own site carries a standing notice asking the public to email consular.bdusa@gmail.com for dead body repatriation, attestation and other consular matters. That email address is the doorway for a Dallas family.

The page that should hold the procedure is empty

This is the honest heart of the guide. The embassy has a page titled Dead Body Repatriation, and when we opened it there was nothing on it. The page shows a placeholder heading and an unlabelled link and no requirements, no document list, no fee and no timetable. It is a template that was never filled in.

So the procedure a Dallas family needs is not published by the office that handles Dallas. That is a gap in publication rather than evidence that nothing is required, and it changes the first step: instead of assembling a file from a web page, write to the embassy address above, say plainly that a Bangladeshi national has died in Texas, and ask for the current list, any fee, and how long attestation takes. Get it in writing before ordering documents.

The only published list belongs to another office

One Bangladeshi mission does publish something. The Consulate General in Los Angeles states on its repatriation page that it attests all necessary documents for transportation of dead bodies of expatriate Bangladeshi nationals to Bangladesh for burial or last rituals, and lists a death certificate or transcript, a certificate that there was no communicable disease, a permit to dispose of or transport human remains, and an exemplification of birth or death record. It adds that the service is provided on the same day on an urgent basis without any fees.

Treat that as indicative and nothing more. Los Angeles does not cover Texas, and its list names a New York City health agency, which suggests the page was copied from another mission rather than written for California. It is still worth having in front of you when you write to Washington, because it tells you the shape of the answer to expect and the questions to ask.

Bangladesh joined the apostille system in 2025

This is the fact most older advice gets wrong, so check the date on anything else you read. The HCCH status table, read on September 21, 2026, shows Bangladesh acceding on July 29, 2024 with the Convention entering into force for it on March 30, 2025. Before that, documents needed the longer legalization chain.

Several European states objected to the accession, among them France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Austria and others, and Argentina. The United States is not among the objectors, which is what matters here: a certificate from the Texas Secretary of State is available for a Texas document going to Bangladesh, and the authentication FAQ explains how to get one. Ask the embassy whether it wants the apostille, the older legalization route, or its own attestation, because the change is recent enough that offices may still answer differently.

The welfare board, and a page we could not read

Bangladesh’s Wage Earners’ Welfare Board is the body families are usually pointed to. It publishes a page whose title translates as body transport and burial costs, which is exactly the subject. When we opened it in an ordinary browser the site furniture loaded, a last-updated date appeared, and the content area came back empty. We could read the title and the date and nothing else.

We will not fill that space with a figure from somewhere else. If your relative went abroad for work and was registered, ask the embassy whether the welfare board has a role and what it pays; if they emigrated and settled here, expect the answer to be no. The guide to government schemes explains how these boards usually work across the region.

Routes and what the carriers publish

There is no nonstop from Dallas/Fort Worth to Dhaka, so every case connects, most often through Istanbul or Dubai. Turkish Cargo publishes the packing standard it expects: the deceased must be packaged in a manner that prevents odour and leakage and placed in a durable wooden or metal coffin to prevent damage, and its document list for international funeral shipments includes a death certificate approved by the consulate and translated into Turkish, plus a consular letter. Emirates SkyCargo’s Solace document asks for a hermetically sealed inner containment inside a wooden or metal outer coffin, and says re-used coffins are not permitted.

Notice that the Turkish list expects a consular letter. With the embassy’s own procedure unpublished, that letter is the single thing to settle first, because without it the booking cannot be made honestly. Our guide to airlines and cargo agents explains what a carrier can confirm in advance and what it cannot.

Questions families ask about a return to Bangladesh

Which office handles a Dallas case?
The consular section of the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington DC. The New York consulate's jurisdiction page says all states outside its own eight are serviced by that embassy, and no Bangladeshi office is listed in Texas.
Why is there no document list here?
Because the embassy has not published one. Its page titled Dead Body Repatriation is an empty template. We would rather tell you that than copy another mission's list and present it as the rule for Texas.
Does a Texas apostille work for Bangladesh?
It should. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention with effect from March 30, 2025, and the United States did not object to the accession. Because the change is recent, ask the embassy which form of authentication it wants.

Sources checked and case confirmation

Sources checked September 21, 2026. The embassy’s repatriation page is an unfilled template, the welfare board’s page renders empty, and no Bangladeshi office appears on the Texas consulate list; all three are stated above rather than papered over. Confirm the documents, any fee, the form of authentication, the route and the receiving arrangements for the individual case.
