What immediate burial means

The FTC Funeral Rule defines an immediate burial as a disposition of human remains by burial, without formal viewing, visitation, or ceremony with the body present, except for a graveside service (16 C.F.R. § 453.1(k)). Families also call it a direct burial, or a private burial when only close family gather at the grave. Your loved one is brought into our care, placed in a casket or an alternative container, and buried at the cemetery the family chooses, without a public viewing or funeral ceremony beforehand.

It is the burial counterpart of direct cremation. If a viewing, a funeral service in our chapel or your church, or a procession matters to your family, our traditional funeral page describes that arrangement and its price.

What is priced separately

Our General Price List shows each of these as its own item. Which ones apply to your arrangement appears on the written statement you receive before you decide, and you may choose only the items you want.

  • The cemetery. The grave space and the cemetery's own charges are set by the cemetery and passed through at cost. See cemetery charges below.
  • An outer burial container, when the cemetery requires one: a concrete grave liner is $1,650 ($1,750 oversized), and burial vaults on our list run from $1,850 to $12,000.
  • Transfer from the place of death: $350 up to 300 lbs, $450 over 300 lbs.
  • Certified death certificates, a state fee passed through at cost: $21 for the first, $5 for each additional copy.
  • A graveside gathering, if the family wants one: a committal service at graveside is $400; a graveside service, including accompaniment of remains, is $450.
  • Embalming, $900, only if you choose it. Except in certain special cases, embalming is not required by law.
  • Weekend or holiday burial: an additional $400 on Saturday or Sunday, and $1,000 on the holidays our price list names.
  • Any other item on our General Price List that you choose.

Cemetery charges are a third party's

The cemetery is a separate business with its own price list. Cemetery charges, medical examiner charges and additional certified copies are pass-through costs: we collect them on your behalf and forward them without markup, and they appear as their own lines on your Statement of Funeral Goods and Services. Ask the cemetery for its charges in writing, as you ask us for ours.

Our General Price List carries the Funeral Rule's own words on outer burial containers: in most areas of the country, state or local law does not require that you buy a container to surround the casket in the grave. However, many cemeteries require that you have such a container so that the grave will not sink in. Either a grave liner or a burial vault will satisfy these requirements.

How an immediate burial works, step by step

Most of the work happens before the day of burial. We keep the family informed at each step.

  1. Call us at any hour. Tell us where your loved one is now and whether the family has a cemetery in mind. Our line is answered 24 hours a day: (214) 550-7369.
  2. We bring your loved one into our care. We handle the release with the hospital, facility or medical examiner.
  3. You choose the container. A casket from our caskets page, a casket bought elsewhere, or our alternative container. We give you the written statement with every item and its price.
  4. We prepare the paperwork. We file the death certificate, order the certified copies you ask for, and obtain any permit the cemetery or the law requires.
  5. We coordinate with the cemetery. The grave space, the cemetery's requirements and its charges are confirmed with you in writing.
  6. Burial. Your loved one is taken to the cemetery and buried. If the family wishes, a brief committal or graveside service is added from our price list.

Questions families ask

How much does an immediate burial cost in Dallas?

On our General Price List, effective 27 September 2026, immediate burial is $1,850 when the family provides the container, $2,150 with an alternative container from our facility, and $1,850 plus the casket when the casket is purchased from us. Each price includes the basic services of our funeral director and staff. The cemetery's charges are separate.

Is immediate burial the same as direct burial?

Yes. Direct burial is the everyday name; immediate burial is the term the FTC Funeral Rule uses and the line you will find on our General Price List. Both mean burial without a formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present, except for a graveside service.

Is the cemetery included in the price?

No. The grave space and the cemetery's own charges are set by the cemetery. They are pass-through costs: we collect them on your behalf, forward them without markup, and show them as their own lines on your statement. Many cemeteries also require an outer burial container, listed separately on our price list.

Do we need a casket for an immediate burial?

Your loved one needs a casket or an alternative container. Our $2,150 line includes an alternative container from our facility. If you prefer a casket, our caskets page lists every model and price, and the Funeral Rule lets you supply a casket bought elsewhere without a handling fee.

Is embalming required for an immediate burial?

Except in certain special cases, embalming is not required by law, and it is not part of an immediate burial unless you choose it. If you select it, it appears on our General Price List at $900.

Can the family be at the grave?

Yes. The Funeral Rule's definition of immediate burial excludes a formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present, except for a graveside service. If you would like a brief gathering at the grave, our General Price List shows a committal service at graveside at $400 and a graveside service, including accompaniment of remains, at $450.

What is a private burial service?

Families use the phrase for a burial attended by close family only, with no public viewing or funeral ceremony. On our price list that is an immediate burial, with a graveside or committal service added if the family wants a few words at the grave.

Does the price include the death certificate?

Certified copies are a state fee passed through at cost: $21 for the first certified death certificate and $5 for each additional copy on our General Price List.

How do we get the price in writing?

Call (214) 550-7369 at any hour or ask for our General Price List, which is free and carries no obligation. Before you decide, you receive a written statement listing every item you selected and its price.
