Methodist Dallas Medical Center: A Family Guide to the Release Process and Funeral Home Transfer

Methodist Dallas Medical Center is the flagship of Methodist Health System and the primary hospital serving Oak Cliff, Bishop Arts, and much of South Dallas. Many of the families we serve at Methodist Dallas are bilingual Spanish-speaking households, and this guide is written with that community in mind. If you are reading this a few hours after a death, the important thing to know is that nothing has to happen right now.

Methodist Dallas is a 585-bed acute-care hospital located just west of the Trinity River in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of southern Dallas. The main campus sits along Beckley Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, with the Charles A. Sammons Tower and the Golding Tower forming most of the inpatient bed space. Patient-drop-off is on Beckley; the emergency entrance is off Colorado. Free surface parking is available, and there are visitor garages for extended stays.

Methodist Dallas is a Level I Trauma Center, a stroke-certified hospital, and a designated transplant center, so many of the deaths that occur there are the end of a longer critical-care admission — an ICU stay, a stroke, or a chronic illness in Methodist's cardiac or oncology programs.

From our office at 12101 Greenville Avenue in North Dallas, Methodist Dallas is roughly a 20-to-25-minute drive: south on US-75, west on I-30, and south on I-35E to the Colorado Boulevard exit. Traffic on I-35E through downtown can extend this in the afternoon; overnight the drive is usually closer to 20 minutes.

What happens inside the hospital after a death

The Methodist Dallas care team follows the standard Texas hospital decedent-care sequence, adapted to the family and the setting:

1. The attending physician or unit charge nurse confirms and documents the time of death.
2. The family, if present, is invited to stay in the room. Nursing staff generally give as much time as the unit can accommodate — this is often longer on a medical/surgical floor than in a busy trauma bay.
3. The family can request Methodist's chaplaincy team through the nurse. Methodist's Pastoral Care department serves families of all faiths; if the family is Catholic, chaplains can typically arrange a priest for the sacrament of anointing. Bilingual chaplains are frequently available given the Oak Cliff / South Dallas demographic.
4. The nurse or unit clerk asks the family to name the funeral home. If no choice has been made, this is when we recommend calling Vargas-London. Methodist Dallas does not choose a funeral home for the family; the hospital's role is to release your loved one to whichever licensed funeral establishment the family names.
5. When the family is ready, the deceased is moved by hospital transport staff to Methodist's on-site holding area, where they are cared for until the funeral home arrives.
6. Methodist may ask about organ or tissue donation if the deceased was a registered donor, and — separately — about an autopsy if the physician recommends one. Both are optional decisions and neither is required before the family names a funeral home.

Calling Vargas-London from Methodist Dallas

You can call us at (214) 550-7369 at any time of day or night, in English or Spanish. Some families call within the first hour; others wait until the next morning after gathering family or a pastor. Both are normal, and Methodist will care for your loved one in the meantime.

On the call, our staff will ask:

• The deceased's full legal name and date of birth
• The Methodist Dallas unit or floor (for example, "Sammons Tower, Cardiac ICU")
• Your name, relationship to the deceased, and a callback number
• Your language preference for the arrangement work that follows
• Any initial preference for cremation or burial — again, no commitment attached; this only shapes what we prepare

We then reach out to Methodist's decedent-care line to confirm the release paperwork is in order and give the family a callback time.

Documentation the family will need

Most of the release paperwork happens directly between Methodist Dallas and the funeral home — the family does not sign a release form at the morgue. What is specific to Methodist: keep the decedent packet or discharge disposition form the unit clerk hands the next of kin, since it carries the hospital’s case references, and note that Methodist’s Oak Cliff campus releases only to a licensed funeral establishment, so nothing needs to be signed on-site. The transfer itself

Once we have your call and Methodist has begun the decedent packet, one of our transfer specialists drives directly to Methodist Dallas. Methodist has an internal decedent-care access route that funeral homes use — it is not a public entrance and the family does not need to give directions or meet the team on-site.

• Typical arrival: 50 to 90 minutes after the call, depending on traffic on I-35E and time of day.
• The transfer specialist signs Methodist's internal release form and takes custody of any personal effects the unit staff has gathered for the family.
• Your loved one is transported to our care center off Greenville Avenue.
• We call the family within a few hours to confirm the transfer is complete and to set the arrangement conference at the family's convenience — in English or Spanish, at our office, by phone, or by video.

The family does not need to be present at any point during the transfer.

If no family was at the hospital when the death occurred

Overnight and early-morning calls from a Methodist Dallas nurse or house supervisor are common. If you receive that call:

1. Write down the caller's name, direct extension, and the unit or floor.
2. Ask whether any funeral home has been named — Methodist Dallas will not have made this choice on the family's behalf.
3. Call Vargas-London at (214) 550-7369 when you feel ready. We will contact Methodist on your behalf.
4. You do not need to drive to the hospital. If you want to spend time with your loved one before the transfer, we can help coordinate that with Methodist's staff, but it is optional.

After the transfer: the arrangement conference

Within 24 to 72 hours of the transfer, Vargas-London holds the arrangement conference. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, 16 C.F.R. Part 453, we are required to give the family a written General Price List before you are asked to make any decision, and to itemize what you are and are not selecting. The conference typically covers:

• Direct cremation ($1,750), memorial cremation ($4,995), or traditional funeral (from $6,350)
• Casket, urn, or keepsake selection (no obligation)
• Religious or cultural elements — Methodist Dallas serves many Catholic and Protestant families in Oak Cliff, and we regularly coordinate services with parish priests, pastors, and mariachi or bilingual liturgy where the family asks
• Cemetery selection, if burial is chosen — Laurel Land Memorial Park in South Dallas is one of the closest options; Oakland and Calvary Hill are also frequent choices
• Filing the Texas death certificate and, if applicable, VA Form 21P-530 for veteran benefits
• Obituary drafting in English, Spanish, or both
